Faith in God
Faith in God is trusting in Him based on knowing Him as He is, as He has revealed Himself in the Bible. Faith in God involves accepting not only with the spirit but also with the mind the truth about God and the transformation of life that results from that truth.
Key Areas of Faith in God
Faith in God has many aspects. First, it is believing that God exists. But simply believing that God exists is not enough. As James 2:19 says, even the demons believe that God exists—but this does them no good.
After accepting that God exists, the next step is to surrender to Him. Faith without works is dead faith—it is not true faith (James 2:26).
Accepting God According to Scripture
However, faith that motivates us to do good is still not enough. True faith must be faith in God as He has revealed Himself in the Scriptures. We do not engage in choosing the qualities of God that we like and rejecting the ones that we do not like. If we do so, we are believing in a “false god” that we have created in our own minds. Many denominations do this, but any religion that does not believe in the Bible is a fictional religion with a fictional god.
Therefore, true faith must be faith in the true God. For example, the God of the Bible is a Trinity—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—so true faith must accept the divinity and characteristics of all three.
A Correct Understanding of Faith
Today there is great confusion about the meaning of faith. Some think that faith is “believing in something you do not know is true.” Many atheists assume that Christians simply have faith without evidence, while they have scientific knowledge. They say, “Christians have faith, we have science.”
But that concept does not accurately describe the nature of faith in God.
Faith is not blindly accepting something without evidence or even contrary to evidence. Faith is trust. A Christian trusts God, just as an atheist puts his faith in science.
For example, an atheist may use a scientifically developed medicine. When he takes the medicine in the hope that it will cure him, he has already put his faith in the scientific research. Some take the medicine without understanding anything about how it is made, while others do extensive research before using it. At the end of the day, all have put their faith in the medicine.
The power of faith cannot make an ineffective medicine better; it is what we believe that makes the difference. Even a skeptic can have true faith. As Mark 9:24 says, a person can believe and still have a little doubt. Doubt can be part of a faith that seeks to understand more.
How People Come to Believe in God
Some believe in God because they were raised in the Christian faith. They have seen God’s works in the lives of others. Others believe after examining the evidence for God’s existence.
In whatever way a person comes to believe in the God of the Bible—whether by feeling or by deep reflection—believing that is the measure of true faith.
Those Who Deny the Existence of God
Similarly, an atheist (one who does not believe in God) can reach this position through reflection or through feeling. In the end, he also believes that God does not exist, because he has placed his faith in his own thinking or analysis and has decided to live according to what he believes.
Therefore, despite different positions, everyone has a certain level of faith—everyone believes something. It is difficult to live without believing in anything, even if it is based on your feelings. The difference lies in what our faith is directed towards. That is why the basis of faith is the most important thing.
May the Blessings of God be with You All!
